Well, we managed to make a short trip long....we liked Miami Oklahoma so much that we decided to visit it twice! Unfortunately, it wasn't on purpose. We had a quick (140 mile) trip to Oklahoma and I missed a turnoff - so we turned the 140 mile trip into a 195 mile trip.....
BLUF:
Took Highway 90 - out of Arkansas - REALLLY Curvy road - weather was good - bike was running well.
Stopped in Miami Oklahoma and visited the Ku Ku Burger place
|
The last remaining Ku Ku's |
As well as drove up and down Route 66....
|
Unfortunately, this wasn't Friday night - but the cruisers will come out later tonight... |
Visited the Motorcycle (Iron Horse) Museum.
|
Yep.....that is Evel Kneivel's suit.... |
Hit rain right outside of our destination - but made it in okay - although a few hours later than anticipated.
And now....The Rest of the Story....
We left Bella Vista Arkansas around 8:30. Apparently, the town has been growing so much over the last several years - and the infrastructure (roads) haven't caught up to it yet - so the traffic is terrible during "commute" time. But we drove back into Missouri and took Hwy 90 - and it was (wait for it....)awesome - curvy, green, not only right and left, but up and down....again, we drive like a couple of little old ladies on Sunday - but there was not cars on the road, lots of trees and animals and stuff to look at....so it was a great drive... Eventually, we turned onto Hwy 43 and took that north - it was a little calmer - but this time of the year - it has great scenery. We took several other highways (none anywhere as cool as Hwy 90 though)...and wound our way into Miami Oklahoma. We cruised Route 66 - and went to......WALMART! Yep, there was a Walmart off of the world's famous route.....and we stopped to get a few essentials (coffee)....for our trip. By the time we got into Miami, it was 11 am - (12 noon our time) - and it was time to EAT!!
So we went back down 66 to Ku Ku's.....Again, this was a franchise in the early 60s/70s - but this is the only one left...
They have a couple of classic cars out front and the place reeks of the 50's....
But the FOOD was excellent....I had the Giant Cheeseburger (not the double) and a small fry - didn't even make a dent on the small fries. Jeanette had the simple burger. We both had them with EVERYTHING - tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup....it was goooooood.
|
It's not a pretty sight - but it is part of the food chain! (I know....I have used that before - but it is so appropriate...) |
|
Notice the Cuckoo at Ku Kus? (and I am not referring to the photo above this one.....) |
We also drove around and took some photos of Route 66 in Miami - there is an old theater that they are restoring - and it is really cool - but we didn't get to take any interior photos...but we did get one from the outside...
|
I have seen photos of the beautiful work on the inside....the county is doing a nice job restoring the building (something near and dear to my heart....) |
We decided to visit the "Iron Horse Motorcycle Museum" at one end (on Route 66) of Miami....it was a nice little museum and had several interesting Evel/Robbie Knievel items (and a bunch of videos playing). There were several "orginal, unrestored" motorcycles as well as some restored Indians and Harleys. It was a nice diversion (and they asked for a donation.....which, by the way - I gave them $8 - to "pay back" the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum.....)
|
Jeanette standing next to one of the jumping bikes - see how tall it is? It is on blocks - but both wheels are on the floor - so that is the actual height.... |
|
And of course - one of the highlights of the museum.....X-rays from Evel Knievel's medical file.....I wonder if you will ever see these on e-bay?? |
|
Some of the motorcycle helmets that apparently people don't wear...... |
So that is it for today. Hope you enjoyed it. Tomorrow and Sunday are "rest" days - Jeanette and I will be taking some trips with my brother Rick and his wife Ann....so I will share with you tomorrow such adventures as "The Frank Lloyd Wright Museum" and "The Blue Whale." I was also going to ask Jeanette to share another "devotion" on Sunday.
Hope you are enjoying our adventure....
Wade and Jeanette
